Each October, Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, Inc. members can be seen wearing black and pink shirts showing support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In 2014, the interest for the shirts was so great that there was extra revenue which the membership agreed to donate to a local organization. Beyond Boobs, a local organization “providing support for young women with breast cancer and breast health education for all,” was suggested by a GVFRS member who had personal knowledge from their support of his family member. On February 9, 2015 the co-founder of Beyond Boobs, Rene Bowditch, and Support System Facilitator Holly Siegle visited GVFRS Station 1, and were presented with a check from the GVFRS membership. The donation will be kept local, assisting breast cancer support efforts on the Middle Peninsula. As a thank you, Beyond Boobs presented GVFRS with a copy of their “2015 – A Calendar to Live By.”
