Happy FirePreventionWeek! The focus for 2017 is home escape plans.

“Every Second Counts, Plan 2 Ways out!”

When there’s a fire in your home seconds make a difference in getting out! Sometimes the closest, or most familiar way out of a room isn’t the safest. That’s why it’s important to know two ways out of every room, and how to get to the exit of your home.

We encourage you to take this opportunity to plan and create a home escape plan, then review it with members of your household. Talk about how to escape each room of the house, how to get out of the house, and where to meet once you’re outside.

Once you have a plan, practice it! In home fire drills are recommended to be practiced at least twice a year.

GVFRS would like to remind everyone of a few more very important fire safety tips:
✅ Make sure your house numbers are visible at the street.
✅ Working smoke alarms save lives! Smoke alarms are recommend to be installed in every bedroom, outside of every sleeping area, and at least one on every floor.
✅ Smoke alarms batteries should be changed when you change your clocks and tested monthly. Also, devices should be replaced every 10 years.
✅ Close doors behind you as you exit in the case of a fire. Closed doors can slow down the fire, smoke, and heat.
✅ When there’s smoke, get down low and crawl. Smoke rises, leaving the fresh air down low. Get down low and crawl until you reach the exit.
✅ NEVER go back inside a burning building. Once you get out, STAY OUT!
