GVFRS Junior EMS & Fire Cadets

Conducted a very successful 2020 blood drive, collecting 123 units.

In addition to their EMS and Firefighting responsibilities, our Juniors and Cadets are also responsible for planning, organizing, and running our Annual Blood Drive in memory of Shaun McNulty, Jr.

The purpose of our Junior EMS and Fire Cadet Programs is to provide  high school students, who have genuine interest in the EMS and fire services, an opportunity to work alongside Department administrators, training officers, medics, and firefighters who will help mentor these young individuals. In doing so, the Juniors and Cadets will also have the opportunity to gain hands on experience, obtain training and certifications, help their community, and experience actual patients and fire scenes.

Junior EMS Program

Our Junior EMS program is designed for high school students between the ages of 16 and 18. Junior members may attend all EMS training, attend our annual EMT course, assist with equipment checks, and are assigned to a squad with which they can run EMS calls.

To be eligible for our Junior EMS program, you must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age and less than 18 when you apply
  • Pass an OEMS/FBI background check
  • Maintain at least a C average in school
  • Be willing and able to become CPR certified

Junior EMS members are allowed to run between the hours of 6pm and 10pm on weeknights, and up to 8 hours on the weekend with their assigned squad.

Fire Cadet Program

The GVFRS Cadet Firefighter Program is for teens of good moral character between the ages of 16-18.  As these Cadet members reach 18 years of age and have graduated from High School, they then become eligible to seek Active Firefighter Membership with GVFRS.  Our goal is to give the cadet youth a sense of belonging and nurture their growth within the fire service, learn valuable skills, and provide an opportunity to serve their community.  The program provides the cadets a chance to experience much of what GVFRS firefighters experience, and to learn the basics before taking the NFPA Level 1 Firefighter Course.  We are looking for individuals that are willing to work as part of a team, be able to take commands from GVFRS firefighters and officers, be able to serve in a professional manner, and be able to attend the regular trainings and meetings.

To be eligible for the Fire Cadet Program, you must:

  • Be a resident of Gloucester County
  • Be between the ages of 16 and 18
  • Maintain at least a C average in school
  • Complete a medical authorization
  • Pass an OEMS/FBI background check

Safety

The safety of our Junior EMS and Fire Cadets is our number one priority. The Juniors and Cadets wear distinctive clothing/PPE that allows them to be immediately identified as a Junior or Cadet. There are restrictions on what the Juniors and Cadets are allowed to do or where to be on a scene and the distinctive clothing/PPE helps to ensure the guidelines are followed. The Juniors and Cadets are allowed to respond to scenes only from the station and on GVFRS apparatus. They are not allowed to respond directly to a scene by themselves.
