On March 6 just before 2pm GVFRS responded to the 2700 block of Hickory Fork Rd for a report of a structure fire with the caller stating there was one occupant still inside. The first arriving units were on scene within minutes and found the single family home fully engulfed in flames, as well as one male outside of the house with burns and an apparent broken leg. The fire was under control within 20 minutes. Crews located a deceased female inside the structure. The injured male was transported to VCU Medical Center. The structure sustained significant damage throughout, and the cause was determined to be accidental. GVFRS responded four engines, one tanker, one rescue truck, two medic units, and approximately 20 people. Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue also responded mutual aid with their tanker and personnel.
