On December 28, 2016 just before 7:30pm GVFRS units were dispatched to a report of a structure fire on Plantation Rd. A neighbor was alerted to the fire after hearing a popping noise, and called 911 stating the house was engulfed in flames. First arriving units found the home to be fully involved, and the single occupant was not home. The fire was marked under control after approximately thirty minutes, and units were on scene for just over two hours. Five engines, one rescue, one tanker, one medic unit, and approximately 35 members responded. Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue responded with their tanker and two members for automatic mutual aid. The house is a total loss, and the cause of the fire is undetermined. W.L. Johnston was in command.
