B6. Driving Fire and EMS Apparatus

Purpose

To establish standard operating procedures for operating fire and EMS vehicles.

Procedure

  1. Driving of the equipment will be done with discretion and within the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Always remember that the whole company rides with you.
  2. Fire Probationary Members shall not drive emergency apparatus while responding to a call during his/her probationary period. After their probationary period, new members may be qualified to drive that piece of fire apparatus after they demonstrate to the Chief Engineer or Assistant Chief, Fire they can operate the equipment, pump and drive that piece of apparatus proficiently.
  3. EMS Probationary Members shall not drive emergency apparatus while responding to a call during their probationary period. After their probationary period, new members may be qualified to drive EMS apparatus after they complete the prescribed driver training program.
  4. Any member’s driving qualifications may be withdrawn at any time by an Assistant Chief or the Chief.
  5. Seat belts – Seat belts shall be worn by the driver and passengers in all fire and rescue apparatus anytime the unit is moving.
